A woman with a big heart is getting a beautiful smile to match. Our 7 On Your Side team is helping Amy, a Melvindale woman, get an extreme dental makeover. It’s the answer to Amy’s dream of a lifetime.

At the age of 33, Amy, a single mom from Melvindale, is about to undergo a extreme dental makeover. It’s a four-week project that will completely change her smile, her face, and her entire life.

Amy spends her days counseling drug addicts. She was homeless herself for 10 long years. Now she’s starting her life all over again and we’re helping her do it.

Dr. Marvin Taylor is owner of The Center for Dental Cosmetics in Birmingham and Waterford, and he has agreed to do the extensive makeover work absolutely for free.

Right now, many of Amy’s teeth are crooked and broken away. A total of 8 teeth have been completely eaten up by decay. Much of her mouth is infected.

"It’s a pretty advanced case, and it takes a lot of thought, as all cases do, of course, but this takes a little more," Dr. Taylor says. "It’s going to be involved, because we’re trying to achieve a very high cosmetic result."

We will follow Amy’s progress week by week. It’s going to take weeks and cost about $20,000, but thanks to Dr. Taylor, Amy is that much closer to her dream.

Wishing for Whiter Teeth?

Are your teeth dark and dingy? Do you yearn for a brighter smile? Have you thought about having your teeth whitened?

According to the American Dental Association, “whitening” means any process that will make teeth appear whiter. This can be accomplished by either bleaching teeth with a peroxide-containing product or by using a non-bleaching whitening toothpaste. Depending on the procedure, it may be done either in the dentist’s office or at home. Products that contain high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, often along with a light or laser, can only be used in the dentist’s office. Whitening toothpastes intended for home use contain polishing or chemical agents that remove surface tooth stains primarily through a polishing action.

What are the downsides of teeth whitening? It can become expensive. It can be also be uncomfortable because the process can make gums and teeth increasingly sensitive. Something which is rarely mentioned in the “do-it-yourself” advertising is that tooth whiteners will NOT bleach out caps, bonding and porcelain veneers. What percentage of the public today does not have teeth with caps, dental bonding or porcelain veneers?
